We live in a large Victorian semi which I bought in 1989, the first year was spent stripping all the walls, rewiring, plumbing, structural work, new kitchen, bathroom etc. etc. Eventually it was finished - or so I thought! After a few years jobs start to accumulate, so the process is ongoing - a bit like the Forth Bridge!
It doesn't help that one of Jill's "hobbies" is moving things around - ornaments, furniture - whole rooms........
The garden was originally a complete mess, and eventually it was tidied up with a lawn and a couple of borders. I was never all that keen on gardening and so I was quite happy with it in that state. - However... Jill's ideas of what a garden should look like were a bit more ambitious than mine and we embarked on a programme of re-design (in fact, a complete makeover!) building patios, ponds, paths, replanting the borders etc.
The beginning.... Over the years I have become more enthusiastic about the garden, looking forward to the seasons and the plants that come with them. Weather permitting, we get a lot of pleasure just sitting in the garden (with appropriate refreshment) just absorbing the sights and scents of the plants, watching the wildlife and generally chilling out.

The garden is quite mature now, so much so that we seem to spend more time cutting back the plants rather than encouraging them to grow! We have planted quite a few roses and one particular rambler - Paul's Himalayan Musk - has taken over most of the garden, it looks fantastic for a few weeks in June when the flowers are out but then it just grows and grows, so if you have a smallish plot and are tempted to plant one, think twice about it!
